Clouds are so commonplace we seldom notice them, and if we do, we’re probably just checking the weather. But I’ve been taking a closer look, and I want to show you what I’ve found. Clouds are ephemeral, transforming and decaying as they move across the sky. When I stop the action with a digital camera, and open up the tonal range with imaging software such as Photoshop, clouds reveal themselves as intricately textured three-dimensional forms. They show us the complex rhythms of flowing currents of air that constantly circulate around us: rhythmic waves, vortices, spiraling movements and meandering curves. They gesture and take on forms that have a poetic resonance. I’m going to show some of the results of my investigations in a variety of media: pigment prints of the photographs, to which I sometimes add drawing or painting, and a 3D sculptural relief I made from one of the photographs using digital imaging and rapid prototyping software. About Helen Glazer:
Helen Glazer graduated from Yale University with a B.A. cum laude in art and from the Maryland Institute College of Art with an M.F.A. in painting, and has exhibited regularly since age 21 when she had a painting accepted into the Maryland Biennial at the Baltimore Museum of Art. A 1993 mural commission from the City of Baltimore became a neighborhood landmark, featured in Baltimore magazine (2001) and the national magazine Sky and Telescope (2003). She made her first relief sculptures in 1996, in response to a commission to create a mural for an elementary school that would be accessible to students there in a special program for the visually impaired. She is the past recipient of a print commission from Goya Girl Press in Baltimore, and individual artist’s grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and City of Baltimore. Her works are in public and private collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Medical College of Virginia and the Chautauqua Institution, New York. Glazer's work has been exhibited in East Coast cities from New York City to Miami. She is represented by the Steven Scott Gallery, in the Fells Point section of Baltimore.
